On Thursday, I was participant to what seemed like the world’s longest closing. It started at 10:00am, broke off because some documentation had to be redone, resumed at 1:30pm; then went on till 3:30 because a number of errors were discovered (like the survey belonging to a different house– TWICE; wrong amounts, multiple times). From what I understand, the buyers didn’t get out of the Title Company’s office till sometime around 5:30. Most of this, on account of the financing being rather… “creative” and everything having to be run by the lender every time a change was discovered. Of course, it was somewhat ironic that the lender approved the package twice, with the wrong survey in the package….
But at least it’s a done deal; and the the “leaseback” now lasts till September 19th.
Meanwhile, the packing continues. I more or less got my office packed today, all but a few things needed to keep my life “running” for a couple more weeks. Overall, the packing is progressing pretty well, relative to the number of days left. This doesn’t mean that I don’t run around with a certain frantic feeling and I do worry about the days when I will have to bring everything that’s in the mini-storage space back over to the house, so it can be loaded on the container.
Moving is an expensive proposition, especially when you are going 2400 miles, across the country. A “full-service” moving company would charge on the order of $13,000-$16,000 to move a 4-bedroom house from Austin to Seattle. A so-called “box hauler” will come and dump off a trailer in the driveway, then you self-pack and load the trailer, they haul it to a terminal in Kent, WA and hold till provided a delivery time and destination… and that only costs about $4,500. It’s basically renting space on a UPS package trailer. It’s not for everyone, of course, but when economy matters, it’s a good deal… not a whole lot more than renting a truck, a trailer for the car, gas, insurance, etc.
Just 17 more days…

I’ll be countin down with you! It’s cold and grey on the North Coast of California today, but I will also promise that fall is the best season here. I hope Seattle greets you with all of its prime glory. In the meantime, keep breathin!
You will be keeping that computer unpacked, right????
This has been such a long process for you. It seems like every step of the way has been dragged out, time wise…..straight through till closing. Oh well, not to dwell on that…..in no time at all you will be off and running in a new direction. I keep telling you how happy I am for you because it’s the truth!!! Hugs, Colleen
Your own personal paradise awaits. Will miss you while you’re relocating.
xoxoxo
Expensive both monetarily and emotionally. Hope that the two and a half weeks pass as stress free as possible.
I hate moving. Hate hate hate it. I moved to Florida in 1990, don’t remember what they charged, but it was ridiculous then, and worse now. Haven’t budged since. Luckily, don’t need to.
Good luck with your move.
I’m getting ready to move myself. My problem is that most everything will have to be kept in storage for a while. So I am brain storming for options. My company no longer pays to relocate, so even though I have been transferred 800 miles away…it’s going to be all put in my lap for the move.
Wishing you a quick and seemless move.
Ohmigosh….imagine what it costs the government everytime a military or naval officer’s family is moved across country! It certainly is nice though, to have the movers come in, wrap all your furniture in protective plastic, empty the drawers for you, etc. The box-hauler sounds like the way I would go. I’m so excited for you and will follow your journey.
Wow. Beats my Friday closing. It was supposed to happen on Thursday, but the mortgage company didn’t even start the background check on the lender (our mortgage broker was using a new company to finance these young kids with bad credit – they’re the only ones who could write them – so our mortage BROKER had to be approved too) until the kids’ mortgage had cleared. It closed Friday, starting around 9 a.m., and adjourning until 2 p.m. when the paperwork was right…
In my 10 years selling real estate we’ve had a few doozies…
Good luck on the move. We just sent a couple on Thursday from their home here in Michigan on the road to California. That’s a long move too.
Keep up the great work and soon your dream will become reality!
How will you get to Washington(it is WA right?)? Flying, driving? So exciting!!
17 days! I move via UPS myself. Have a great long weekend! ^_^
